Each summer, VISIONS participants complete an impressive array of service projects. Below is a list of the work accomplished in each of our sites last summer.
Alaska: Tanacross
Built a 20' x 20' Teen Center for Tanacross village on foundation laid by 2006 VISIONS program; milled spruce logs into lumber for floor joists and siding
Designed, organized, supervised activities day camp for Athabaskan children
Built two 4' tall x 8' wide shelving units for the Tanacross School
BVI: Tortola
Installed 44 posts in the ground to complete first phase of construction of a hog shed for a community member
Built stairs to new access point at Shark's point for the BVI National Parks Trust
Repaired kennels at the BVI Humane Society
Built a fence, repaired steps and landscaped the home of Carol Williams
Installed doors and played with handicapped children at the Rainbow Children's Home
At St. George's School Repaired showers and applied water sealant to outdoor classroom; painted front facade
Started construction / restoration of historic home of Michael Leonard; built one stone wall with archway, collected stones and cleaned bricks for continued construction; helped with weeding and harvesting of pineapples and coconuts at Michael's farm,
Helped lead activities at the East End kids camp
Oral History Project in partnership with the Department for Social Development, a 10-page book of interviews with island elders
On neighboring Virgin Gorda painted classrooms and did other chores at St. Mary's school; painted exterior facade and scraped interior ceiling paint of St. Paul's Community Hall
Costa Rica: Quelonius del Caribe and Quebrada Grande
In the village of Quelonius del Caribe using locally gathered posts and coconut shells constructed a 30' x 120' hatchery habitat for a threatened iguana species; patrolled 1.5 miles of beach nightly for nesting turtles; checked protected hatchery area for baby turtles (tortugitas); weighed and measured newly hatched tortugitas then released them back onto beach
In the village of Quebrada Grande for the local Salon de Mujeres (Women's Center) mixed concrete and poured the foundation for bathrooms, showers and a food serving counter at the Salon; helped install electricity, including digging a 40' power line trench and assisting the electrician; began work on a sidewalk that will lead from the Salon to neighboring church; for the community's Tilapia farm built a stone retaining wall for a fish pond using local river rock and concrete, cleared one pond of grass and debris; constructed a new trail to improve access in bad weather; assisted in demolition of a damaged roof
Dominica: Carib Territory
With OK Rediscovery (Carib/Kalinago youth group) cleared and widened Heritage Trail to an herbal garden, dug out dirt steps, spread tarrish and placed logs for the steps; painted decorative stones around garden plant beds; removed detritus/debris from Crayfish River
Renovated Bataca Community Center by installing windows, support pillars and an overhead beam; cleaned up trash
At Salybia Preschool built and painted computer desks, built a porch and finished the teachers' bathroom
Constructed a small kitchen addition for elder Felixia Valmond
At Kalinago Barana Autê (Kalinago Cultural Village by the sea) painted security bars and picnic tables; power washed steps; weeded and planted flowers; trail work
Dominican Republic
Construction of a block and mortar addition-three new classrooms-to school built by VISIONS in 2006 working with local maestros and under the supervision of Henri Done and Santos Ramos; began construction of a one-room dental clinic: cut rebar, mixed cement, and transferred cinder blocks, dug trenches and laid foundation of the one-room office behind the classrooms
Two murals, including a world map, were planned, drawn and painted on façade of San Luis school
Organized and supervised, with San Luis teenagers, Campamento de Juveniles for over 125 children ages 4 to 13, including English instruction, sports, arts and crafts and games.
Ecuador: Galapagos and Chaupiloma
On the Galapagos Islands eradicated blackberry bushes (non-native invasive species) in the area of Lago Junca and at the La Galapaguera; worked for the park service at the visitor center and by doing trail work at Tijeretas; revitalized a preschool (INFA) playground by building 16' (length) swing set, constructing tire swings and tire tunnels
In the mainland mountain village of Chaupiloma helped continue construction of a preschool: added rafters to the roof, applied skim-coat to interior block walls; worked in the granja (farm) cleaning up the pig sty, weeding in the greenhouse, clearing the entrance gate to the community, organizing the bodega (storage house); assisted numerous families in the community with everyday chores; worked in the guardaria with the children by playing games and helping to prepare meals
Guadeloupe: Terre de Bas
Installed a concrete path and steps between two shaded areas at Grand Ravin Park
Built a swing set and two benches at the local soccer stadium, repaired a third bench
Built and painted four picnic tables
Assisted Service Technique with beautification and clean-up projects
Helped organize and supervise English lessons for local teens and elementary school students
Montana: Blackfeet Reservation
For the Blackfeet Land Trust worked with Dale Pepion at Flat Iron Ranch; boarded up the old hotel building; replaced windows, doors, and walls in ranch buildings; boarded up windows, repaired wind-damaged roof and fencing; painted a deck, ramp, and trim and stained a fence; built a sign and a trash can holder; accomplished yard work at the Ernie Pepion Art of Healing Center
Constructed a 20' x 20' pole barn for Rice and Omi Crawford
Assisted preparations for a sun dance hosted by Tom and Floy Crawford; collected the trees, brush, willows for lodge construction; dug the holes; prepared the grounds; helped prepare and serve food for guests
Collected winter wood with Tom Crawford to use in his sweat lodge
Helped with preparations for Heart Butte Indian Days Pow Wow
Assisted Blackfeet Housing Department in neighborhood clean-up with Robin Bird, Frank Rides at the Door and local youth
For Browning Head Start replaced all playground wood handrails with plastic Trek material to prevent splinters; lowered monkey bars and a zip line for smaller children; sanded and painted playground structure support poles with Wayne Bull Calf
For Heart Butte Head Start repaired wind-damaged fence, built two picnic tables, weeded and cleaned-up yard
At the Heart Butte Senior Center painted the bathroom, built new outside steps and handrail, replaced screen door; painted picnic tables and barbecue pits; picked up trash and mowed overgrown picnic area built by VISIONS in 1995; painted entry way and dining area with guidance from Carmen Marceau
Mississippi: North Gulfport and Turkey Creek
Constructed a 50' arched wooden walking bridge over Turkey Creek, connecting one side of an extensive nature trail network with the other; built two 5' x 10' fishing decks to be placed along the creek
Painted images and inspirational quotes on all walls of a large activity room in the Good Deeds Community Center; gathered up and cleaned boxes of books and transferred them from the old Good Deeds Center to the new one
Painted exterior of Deacon Sam Williams' house
For Mississippi Audubon Society in Pascagoula disassembled old decking and saved lumber for later use; dug marsh channels
Repaired door on outdoor classroom built by VISIONS Mississippi 2006 for the North Gulfport Middle School
For the North Gulfport Community Land Trust distributed newsletters door-to-door
Nicaragua: Jinotega
With AVODEC, a Jinotega-based NGO and local projects partner, assisted construction of 10 compost latrines for the village of Las Tejeras; delivered bricks, rocks, sand, concrete, and aluminum panels to the village; prepared materials for mortar construction
With AVODEC and the communities of Chauite Grande and Sigle II, assisted with the construction of one section of a 25 km potable water system; dug trenches, removed boulders, prepared the trenches for pipe
Peru: Urubamba
For the community of Amantoy built an adobe PRONOEI (preschool) with local maestros Ismael and Julio and others
Completed construction of a ceramics classroom for rural Yana Huara's high school working with maestros Ishmael and Yerson and other community members: finished the classroom and the roof (made of logs, bamboo, ceramic tiles, and mud), leveled the floor and laid down concrete, installed a sidewalk around the classroom, and plastered the interior and exterior of the school
Constructed a ceramics oven for the classroom: leveled out the foundation, helped cut and lay ceramic block and mud to create a large, fully functional dome-like oven for firing of ceramics pieces
With ProPeru, a Sacred Valley-based development/educational program for college students, assembled and installed cocinas mejoradas (smokeless stoves) in the homes of community members
Assisted artisans and farmers in talleres - weaving, bee keeping, pottery-making, and more
