Each weekday we worked on projects which included rebuilding a community center and a visitor center, running a summer day camp for local kids, mixing and pouring cement for a black top at a local school, and painting a local bus stop. Additionally, I learned Dominican practices and customs, such as wood carving, sugarcane juice making, cocoa tea making, jewelry making, and mask carving. Most importantly, I valued the relationships I formed not only with my fellow participants, but the natives of the island as well.

My two summers with VISIONS have been the most rewarding experiences of my life. Two years ago I would never have imagined I’d be so [culturally aware] and find such joy from doing community service. It’s still surreal to me that I have not just vacationed but LIVED in Montana and Dominica and have formed bonds with kids from around the globe. I am extremely lucky to have been able to live in and experience cultures so foreign to me. Visions Dominica was a huge eye-opener for me. ... Traveling to a tiny, foreign country with like-minded teenagers and being immersed in a culture drastically different than my own was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had thus far in my life. We were welcomed into the Domincan culture immediately! We spent time with local kids and heard the old Carib music. It was amazing to be able to join their community. The VISIONS trip helped me in exploring who I am and I gained the confidence I’ve been looking for.
